Japan PM’s Assam visit likely to be called off; reason remains unclear

Must read

Guwahati, June 23: The proposed visit of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to Assam next month, which was expected to bring the annual India-Japan summit to Guwahati, has reportedly been called off, according to sources familiar with the development.

The visit had generated considerable excitement in Assam, with expectations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart would meet in Guwahati for high-level discussions on trade, investment, connectivity and strategic cooperation.

The proposed summit was widely viewed as a diplomatic milestone for Assam and the Northeast, reflecting the region’s growing importance in India’s Act East policy and Japan’s increasing engagement with Northeast India.

However, while reports indicate that the visit will not go ahead as planned, no official statement has yet been issued by the Government of India or Japanese authorities explaining the reasons behind the development.

Officials have also not indicated whether the summit will be rescheduled, shifted to another venue, or held at a later date.

The development is particularly significant because Guwahati was expected to host one of the highest-profile international diplomatic engagements in its history. The visit would also have carried symbolic importance, coming nearly seven years after former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s planned visit to Assam was cancelled amid the anti-CAA unrest of 2019.

For now, officials remain tight-lipped, and the circumstances surrounding the reported cancellation remain unclear.
