Guwahati, July 18: A viral video from Arunachal Pradesh’s remote Anjaw district has thrown the spotlight on the extraordinary lengths villagers go to in the absence of basic infrastructure, showing a group of women suspended over a river as they crawl across a steel cable to reach their farms.
The footage, widely shared on social media, captures the women fastening themselves with ropes before inching their way upside down across the Ampani River on a steel wire—an arduous and risky journey that locals say is part of their daily commute to agricultural fields.
The improvised rope-and-wire crossing, reminiscent of a scene from an adventure film, is the only way many villagers can access farmland after the absence of a bridge leaves them cut off, particularly during the monsoon.
While the video has drawn admiration for the courage and determination of the women, it has also sparked concern over the lack of all-weather connectivity in one of India’s easternmost border districts.
Residents say the women undertake the hazardous crossing almost every day, risking their lives to sustain their livelihoods.
The incident has renewed calls for improved road and bridge infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh’s remote frontier villages, where swollen rivers and rugged terrain continue to isolate communities and make access to farms, schools and healthcare a challenge.
