Shillong, Feb 29: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) today initiated construction of houses for Khasi resident, who are in need of housing at Maxwelton Estate in Laban, Shillong.
The construction led by KSU’s Laban circle is a way of protest to send a message to the government that they would not allow any ‘illegal’ non-tribal to settle in the area.
The student body has given a 15 day ultimatum to the government to evict alleged non-tribal from Maxwelton Estate. The ultimatum was served to the government on February 14 to evict all illegal settlers and cattle breeders from Maxwelton Estate, a 9 acres of land.
The members displayed banners with slogan to show their anger against the government. The banners reads “KSU won’t allow Maxwelton Estate to be Them Mator 2.0”.
The student body has warned the administration not to dismantle the houses built for the Khasis. “If the administration decides to demolish the houses, we will retaliate by demolishing all other houses in the area”, said Rueben Najair, president of KSU Laban circle.
The KSU alleged that there are huge number of illegal settlers in the estate, who are residing without the consent or approval of the Dorbar Shnong, Kenches Trace, Oxford Rilbong or any other appropriate authority.
Recently, the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong had said that the residents at the Maxwelton Estate will have to be prepared to shift from that location if they are “illegal settlers”.
“The law will prevail and the law will take its own course and if it is true that they are illegal settlers, then ultimately they will have to be ready to shift from that locality,” the Deputy CM had stated.
