SHILLONG, FEB 4: Local vehicle operators in Meghalaya have petitioned Deputy Chief Minister incharge transport Sngiawbhalang Dhar, opposing the mandatory installation of Vehicle Location Tracking devices in vehicles plying within districts.

The operators cite financial burdens, limited operational areas, privacy concerns, and technical issues, saying the devices are unnecessary for local vehicles.

“The cost of purchasing, installing, and maintaining Vehicles Location Tracking devices places an excessive financial burden on economically weaker drivers and small vehicle owners,” President of the East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association (EKHLTWA) Wandonbok Jyrwa said in the petition submitted to Dhar on Wednesday.

The associations had earlier disapproved the installation, and now requests exemption or financial assistance and clear data protection guidelines.

“We humbly request exemption from mandatory Vehicles Location Tracking installation and suspension of implementation until proper consultation with stakeholders,” he stated.
