Lycans crowned champions of Tura Super Cup Basketball Tournament

Tura, June 13: The highly anticipated Tura Super Cup Basketball Tournament concluded on Thursday with a thrilling final match at Don Bosco College, Tura. Lycans emerged victorious, defeating Dubakh with a commanding score of 91-72, to claim the coveted trophy.

The final contest was a nail-biter from the start, with both teams trading baskets and maintaining a slim one-point difference in the first quarter. However, as the game progressed through the second and third quarters, the point gap began to tilt steadily in favor of Lycans. By the final fourth quarter, Lycans had established a significant 19-point lead, ultimately securing their championship title.

Along with the winner’s trophy, Lycans received a grand prize of ₹3 lakhs, while deserving runners-up, Dubakh, were awarded ₹1 lakh along with the runners-up trophy.

Individual accolades were also presented, with John Paul Tirkey from Team Samurai recognized as the Rising Star of the Tournament and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Tournament was awarded to Cham Ngachamsung J. from the champion team, Lycans.

The closing ceremony was graced by prominent dignitaries, including the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Government of Meghalaya, Shakliar Warjri, who also presented a benefaction of ₹3 lakhs to the Tura Basketball Club, acknowledging their efforts in organizing the successful event. Also in attendance were Vibhor Agarwal, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills; Saljagring M Marak, DSO, West Garo Hills;  and Fr. Januarius S Sangma, Principal, Don Bosco College, Tura.

In his address, Warjri spoke on the government’s dedicated efforts towards making the upcoming 39th National Games a monumental success. He noted the ongoing collaboration with various associations to achieve this ambitious goal and ensuring Meghalaya’s resounding success in the games.

Organized by the Tura Basketball Club, the tourney aimed at honing the abilities and performance of the local players, especially with Meghalaya set to host the 39th National Games in 2027 and also set a new benchmark for sporting events in the region.
