Shillong, July 19: The MLA of Mahendraganj constituency Sanjay A. Sangma, has written a series of letters to the Meghalaya government, highlighting pressing issues affecting South West Garo Hills and requesting immediate intervention across multiple sectors – including health, education, infrastructure and security.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the MLA seeking sanction for the construction of a new building for Mahendraganj Deficit Higher Secondary School. The existing structure, which is over 75 years old, has deteriorated beyond repair and poses safety risks to students and staff alike.
The MLA also flagged concerns over poor infrastructure and connectivity, specifically urging the government to upgrade two wooden bridges between Ghugragandi and Kamrapara to RCC (reinforced cement concrete) bridges. These wooden bridges, he noted, are not only outdated but pose serious safety risks to commuters, especially during monsoons.
Turning his attention to the Health sector, MLA wrote to Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Sangma raised serious concerns about the dilapidated condition of Kalaichar Primary Health Centre (PHC), which serves more than 50 villages and over 22,000 people. He noted that the floors, ceiling, doors and windows of the PHC are in a severely damaged state and that the facility urgently needs renovation. He specifically called for the inclusion of a labour room, adolescent counselling room, TB room and a meeting hall to improve healthcare delivery and regular monitoring activities.
He also addressed security concerns in the border area, writing to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to upgrade the temporary Anti-Dacoity Camp at Jhunjoni Tiniali Junction to a permanent outpost. Citing its location near the Assam-Meghalaya border, Sangma highlighted recurring incidents of violence and the urgent need for a stronger security presence to safeguard residents.
