Williamnagar, May 20: East Garo Hills police have arrested a man in Williamnagar for allegedly uploading sexually explicit and vulgar content on social media platforms targeting women.

Police identified the accused as Newbard M. Sangma alias Bethuel, a resident of A·chak Jangigre in Williamnagar. He was arrested on Tuesday following an investigation into alleged obscene posts circulated through his Facebook account and YouTube channel.

According to police, the social media uploads were publicly accessible and prima facie violated provisions related to online obscenity.

A case has been registered at Williamnagar Police Station under Sections 75(IV)(3) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
East Garo Hills police said the action was initiated after authorities received inputs that the accused had been “habitually uploading vulgar content” online.

Police also appealed to the public to report incidents involving online obscenity, cyber blackmail, and sexually explicit material through proper channels, including the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP).
