Imphal, Nov 29:The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has announced a 12-hour total shutdown in Manipur on Saturday, from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m., in protest against “unwarranted road restrictions” imposed by the Army near Leimakhong.
CoTU highlighted that since May 2023, tensions have escalated between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, resulting in the forced displacement of the Kuki-Zo community from the Imphal valley and a complete geographical divide.
The shutdown call comes after the recent abduction of a Military Engineer Services (MES) employee from the Army cantonment in Leimakhong, an incident the Committee condemned while supporting ongoing search and rescue efforts.
Emphasizing the need for secure and unrestricted road connectivity for hill residents, CoTU cited persistent threats from valley-based Meitei militants and urged all stakeholders to ensure the safety and freedom of movement for hill communities.
Simultaneous mass protests are planned at key locations, including Gamgiphai, Saparmeina, Keithelmanbi Military Colony, and Brig. M. Thomas Ground Kangpokpi. Additional demonstrations will be held across Saikul, Leimakhong, Kangchup, New Keithelmanbi, and the Twilang Region.
