Guwahati, Nov 4: Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla has written to Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, seeking urgent intervention to restore and enhance flight connectivity from Imphal, following a drastic reduction in flights to Guwahati and Kolkata.
In his letter, the Governor highlighted that the sharp decline in air services has severely impacted mobility and caused immense hardship to the people of Manipur, noting that air travel remains the state’s only dependable mode of long-distance transportation due to the lack of railway connectivity and unreliable road conditions, especially after recent rains and floods.
Bhalla pointed out that the number of flights between Imphal and Guwahati has been reduced from five to just two per day, while flights to Kolkata have dropped from five to two, with no early morning or late evening options available.
He warned that the reduced services have led to skyrocketing fares and could cause widespread inconvenience during the upcoming winter season when students and patients rely heavily on air travel.
Describing air connectivity as Manipur’s lifeline, the Governor has urged the Civil Aviation Ministry to take prompt action to restore and strengthen flight operations from Imphal to key hubs like Guwahati and Kolkata. Raj Bhavan has said it is closely following up on the matter to ensure timely and effective action in the interest of the people of the state.
