Manipur govt urgently requests helicopter support for escalating crisis in Moreh

Imphal, Jan 17: The Manipur government has officially requested helicopter support from the Ministry of Home Affairs since Wednesday to address emergent needs arising from the escalating law and order situation in the border town of Moreh. Commissioner of Home, T Ranjit Singh, conveyed the urgency in a letter to the Additional Secretary (Police II Division) at the Ministry of Home Affairs, emphasising the serious concern over the continuous exchange of fire. The volatile situation has already resulted in the tragic death of one IRB personnel this morning.

The letter stated in view of the prevalent situation in Moreh, medical emergency may arise anytime.

The Manipur government has urgently sought helicopters from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for a minimum of seven days. This request comes in the aftermath of a severe exchange of gunfire in Moreh town between security forces and suspected Kuki militants armed with sophisticated weapons at multiple locations on Wednesday morning.

Situated 105 km from the state capital Imphal, Moreh faces a volatile law and order situation in Tengnoupal district, including the threat of ambush by Kuki militants and highway blockades by tribal women.

The letter further highlights that on January 4, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had requested specific details regarding the duration and requirements for MHA Air assets (Helicopter), acknowledging constraints in providing continuous air assets due to limited resources in the North East region.

One state police personnel lost their life in an attack by suspected Kuki militants on a security forces vehicle in Moreh town on Wednesday, as confirmed by the police. The incident unfolded as security forces engaged in gunfire exchanges with suspected Kuki militants at three different locations in Moreh town on Wednesday morning.
