Guwahati, Sept 6: Preparations are in full swing in Manipur ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s likely visit to the state on September 13, his first since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023. The Prime Minister is expected to address two major public gatherings — one at Churachandpur’s Peace Ground and another inside Imphal’s historic Kangla Fort.

According to officials, Modi will arrive in Churachandpur by helicopter after inaugurating the Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram. A massive stage and seating arrangements for nearly 9,000 people are being prepared at Peace Ground. The district administration has already declared the area a “no-drone zone,” and security personnel have been deployed in multiple layers. Civil society organisations in the district are also planning to submit memorandums directly to the Prime Minister.
After addressing the Churachandpur gathering and interacting briefly with internally displaced persons (IDPs), the Prime Minister is expected to travel to Imphal, where he will address nearly 15,000 people at Kangla Fort.
In Imphal, the scale of preparations is grand. More than 200 workers, many brought in from outside the state, are engaged in constructing a massive triangular stage inside Kangla Fort. The helipad adjacent to the stage has been renovated, while the iconic Kangla Sha area has been declared strictly off-limits. Round-the-clock security checks, metal detectors, and strict frisking are in place at the entry gates.

Beautification works are simultaneously underway across Imphal. Roads are being freshly painted, medians repaired, and bushes cleared along the routes from Imphal International Airport to Kangla Fort. Inside the airport, walls are being repainted and facilities upgraded to welcome the Prime Minister.
Imphal International Airport has issued a fresh travel advisory, urging passengers to arrive well in advance due to the heightened security measures. Security has been significantly strengthened around the airport premises, with additional police deployment and restricted access points.
Sources say Modi’s visit will be politically significant, with people across the state anticipating key announcements. For many, the trip signals a crucial opportunity to address the concerns of Manipur, still grappling with the aftermath of last year’s ethnic violence.
