MDA govt unlikely to call for all party meet or Special Assembly to discuss final agreement on Assam – Meghalaya boundary dispute

Shillong, Jan 18: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said the government has no plan to call for an all party meeting or a Special Assembly Session to discuss the final agreement for an amicable solution to end the dispute in six areas of difference between Assam and Meghalaya. He, however, said it is upto the Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya to decide if they want to call for a special session or an all party meeting to discuss the issue.

Meghalaya will celebrate its Golden Jubilee or 50 years of statehood on January 21, 2022.

“Not necessarily. That is not (Special Assembly session) required but I leave it to the wisdom of the two chief ministers. I think the best people to decide is both the chief ministers of Assam and Meghalaya,” Tynsong said when asked if further consultation is required before finalizing the agreement on the boundary issue.

On the Congress’ demand for an all party meeting, Tynsong said the state government had already called for a meeting with all the stakeholders.

“If you remember, the CM had called all political parties, district councils, NGOs and other stakeholders. The meeting has already been called and even from Assam, they have already called the meeting, you can find out from the office of the Assam CM. So consultation has already been completed,” he said.

When asked, the deputy chief minister said now the ball is in the court of the two chief ministers whether they will declare it (final agreement) on January 21 or may be prior to that.

“That (also) we leave it to the wisdom of both the chief ministers,” he said while informing that the two chief ministers will again meet before January 21, likely by January 19 or January 20.

“Hopefully within few days time they will fly over to Delhi and sit down with the Union Home Minister,” Tynsong said.

He also refused to further comment on the reports and said, “You will know when both the CMs give an official press conference.”

He said once these six sectors are completed, the two state governments will again go for the second phase, which is considered to be “difficult”.
