Shillong, July 26: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the government is working towards creating economic value out of the sports talent and enthusiasm that the state has.
“Our children are good at different sports, but we have to look at how to generate an economy or employment out of that, and hence the convergence between entrepreneurship and sports is important,” he stated.
He inaugurated the True North Swimming Academy in Lapland under the CM Elevate Program on Friday.
Speaking during the inauguration, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that he was thrilled to see the well-designed layout, high-quality infrastructure and focus on details. “I am also amazed by the passion of the team who had started this project and the results that we see in front of us are a great example of what we can achieve if we put our hearts and souls into what we believe,” he said.
He added that there has to be a strong, vibrant and dynamic culture and ecosystem for entrepreneurship to meet the growing demands of youth who enter the workforce every year.
“In the last year or so, we have cleared 2840 projects under the CM Elevate program, releasing 146 Crs to entrepreneurs and our target in the next two to three years is to touch 20,000 entrepreneurs with a budget of over 500 Crs for different enterprises,” he added.
The Chief Minister also urged the entrepreneurs not to be intimidated by the risks involved in starting a business or enterprise, but work hard towards it to achieve success.
The Chief Minister also informed that the government is working towards creating economic value out of the sports talent and enthusiasm that the state has.
“I hope this institute will be able to provide the swimmers that we need to be able to get medals in the National Games of 2027,” he concluded congratulating team True North.
The True North Centre received the largest support of 1 Cr under the CM Elevate program. Gary Lamare, founding member of team True North, informed that the centre also has a gym, but the focus will be on the swimming academy. He also said that the swimming pool is manned by trained and certified instructors providing a safe environment for the members.
