Authorities plan awareness campaigns amid rising suicide concerns in Tura

Must read

Tura, July 26: Amid growing concern over the rising suicide rates in Tura town, the district administration has confirmed that plans are underway to tackle the issue through awareness and sensitization campaigns. The initiative follows a formal letter received from a concerned resident, urging authorities to act promptly on the disturbing trend.

Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Vibhor Agarwal, IAS, stated that preliminary discussions have already been held with medical professionals at Tura Civil Hospital to assess the situation and chart a path forward.

“We acknowledge that we are still in the planning phase at this point,” said DC Vibhor Agarwal. “But yes, we recently received a letter from one of the residents of Tura regarding this very serious concern, and we’ve discussed the issue with doctors at Tura Civil Hospital. While concrete steps are still being finalized, we are planning to launch awareness campaigns very shortly.”

According to the DC, the focus of the campaign will be on college students, a demographic seen as particularly vulnerable to mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety. “This is a matter where awareness and sensitization are the most important tools,” he emphasized.

The planned outreach will be conducted in collaboration with both the Education and Health Departments. Officials are currently working to determine which colleges to cover and how to manage logistical and funding aspects of the program.

While no firm dates have been announced yet, the administration has assured the public that initiatives will begin soon, signaling a serious and coordinated response to what is increasingly being recognized as a public health priority in Tura and the wider West Garo Hills district.
