Shillong, June 25: Shillong-based waste management startup Recycle Bazzar will launch its mobile application on July 1 on both Android and iOS platforms, with an ambitious plan to create livelihood opportunities for more than 50 local youths as “Titans” or Recycle Captains.

The app launch marks a major step for the startup, which is seeking to combine technology and community participation to build an organized and sustainable waste management ecosystem in Meghalaya.

Founded by entrepreneur Rony Saha, Recycle Bazzar aims to formalise the informal waste sector by turning local youths into neighbourhood-based waste managers. The Recycle Captains serve as “Waste Relationship Managers” in their communities, offering doorstep recycling services while earning an income and preventing recyclable materials from ending up in landfills.

“Our vision has always been to create sustainable livelihoods while solving the waste management challenges faced by our communities,” Saha said.

The startup currently has active Titans in several Shillong localities, including Laitkor, Laitumkhrah, Lumawbah, Madanrting, Nongrah, Lumshyiap, Chandmari, Jaiaw, Chapel Road, Pynthorbah, Laimer, Lummarboh Block 2, Mawlai and Mawpat. While its operations are currently concentrated in Shillong, the company plans to expand into rural areas in the future.

Each Recycle Captain undergoes training in customer relationship management, communication, technology use and on-ground waste collection practices, with the aim of building a skilled green workforce.

Saha also credited the PRIME Meghalaya programme for mentoring the startup and helping it strengthen its business model ahead of expansion.

With its upcoming app launch and youth-driven model, Recycle Bazzar is positioning itself as a homegrown green enterprise seeking to tackle two of Meghalaya’s pressing challenges simultaneously—waste management and youth employment.

The startup has appealed to residents to embrace responsible recycling practices and encouraged more young people to join its growing network of Recycle Captains working towards a cleaner and greener Meghalaya.
