Meghalaya awaiting Assam’s new border panel chief before next round of talks: Deputy CM

Must read

SHILLONG, MAY 11: The Meghalaya regional committee on the West Jaintia Hills sector will move forward only after Assam constitutes its new government and names a chairman for its counterpart panel, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said.

“Let the Government of Assam form the government first and they will send us the names as to who is their new chairman,” said Dhar, who chairs the West Jaintia Hills regional committee.

“Then we will accordingly coordinate with them from the State of Meghalaya.”

Dhar confirmed that Meghalaya’s report on the Block-I, which is one of the remaining areas of difference, is complete but has not been submitted yet.

“The report is with them (district administration) but they are yet to submit it because we told them to keep it in abeyance,” he said.

“Maybe by the end of this month, I will tell them to submit the report to the state government and we will act accordingly when Assam appoints their new chairman from their side.”

Asked about joint inspections to the villages under Block-I, he said the schedule would be decided bilaterally. “We will see and discuss the matter with both the state governments,” Dhar said.

He added that tensions in the Khanduli-Lapangap area have eased for now after an official-level meeting.

“As soon as the election is over and the results have been declared, even in the last two-three days, on May 5, a meeting was held between the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills and the Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong district in the presence of village elders of Khanduli and Lapangap,” he said.

“They have sorted it temporarily and at the moment it should be peaceful as of now,” Dhar added.
