Meghalaya braces for severe weather: IMD warns of squally winds and exceptionally heavy rainfall

Shillong, May 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alarming district-wise weather warning for Meghalaya, forecasting a stretch of intense and potentially hazardous weather conditions starting today and continuing through June 2. Residents across all 12 districts of the state are being urged to take precautionary measures as the region braces for squally winds, thunderstorms, and exceptionally heavy rainfall.

According to the five-day bulletin released midday today, squally winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kmph and gusts up to 60 kmph are expected across several districts, including East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and East Garo Hills. These districts are also forecast to receive extremely to exceptionally heavy rainfall at isolated locations over the next two days.

By May 31, the weather pattern is expected to evolve into widespread thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, affecting both the Garo and Khasi hill regions, as well as Ri-Bhoi and Jaintia Hills. The heavy to very heavy rainfall may continue intermittently into early next week, raising concerns over flash floods, landslides, and damage to infrastructure.

Key Districts Under High Alert:

East & West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills: Forecasts indicate repeated spells of extremely heavy to exceptionally heavy rainfall.

East Garo Hills & East Jaintia Hills: Expected to be among the worst hit with dangerous wind speeds and torrential rains.

Ri-Bhoi & West Jaintia Hills: Likely to experience strong winds and heavy rainfall throughout the period.

The warning is valid daily from 8:30 AM IST to 8:30 AM the following day. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, secure loose outdoor items, and remain updated through official weather bulletins.

Disaster response teams have been placed on alert, and district authorities are monitoring vulnerable areas for possible landslides and flooding. With the monsoon season intensifying early, experts warn that this may be a prelude to a challenging season ahead.

Stay indoors during storms, unplug electronic devices, and steer clear of waterlogged areas. Farmers, fishermen, and travelers are urged to take extra caution.
