Shillong, June 13: In a heartfelt gesture of gratitude, the Meghalaya Cabinet on Friday passed a resolution acknowledging the relentless efforts of all agencies involved in the recent Sohra tragedy, where a tourist went missing for days but was later found to have been murdered.
Cabinet Minister and MDA Spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh informed that the resolution was adopted at the very outset of the cabinet meeting. “At the start of today’s cabinet meeting, we adopted a resolution to formally recognise the contribution of various agencies, particularly the police department, in handling the tragic incident at Sohra,” Lyngdoh said.
He highlighted the extraordinary dedication of the rescue teams, who braved Sohra’s treacherous terrain for over two weeks to retrieve evidence and pursue leads. “The cabinet expressed deep appreciation for the stakeholders—especially the rescue teams—who camped and trekked in Sohra for more than 15 days,” he added.
As a follow-up, the cabinet also resolved to formally meet key officers who played pivotal roles in the investigation, including the Director General of Police and the East Khasi Hills Police team. “This will be a formal gesture to honour their contributions in cracking the case,” Lyngdoh stated.
He further shared that individual acknowledgements had already begun. “I personally met the rescue team in Sohra two days ago, where each volunteer was awarded a cash incentive of ₹15,000 along with certificates,” he said.
This rare public commendation by the Cabinet underscores the emotional gravity and significance of the tragedy for the state.
