Shillong, Oct 30: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday announced a series of rural development initiatives during the CM Connect programme held at Thangsning village under Mawkynrew Block in East Khasi Hills district.
The CM Connect programme — a flagship citizen engagement platform — enables the Chief Minister to directly interact with people at the grassroots, hear their concerns, and ensure that government policies align with local needs.
During the interaction, community members raised issues such as the need for higher secondary schools, a community college, better road and bridge connectivity, expansion of water supply schemes, and the creation of more Anganwadi and veterinary centres.
Responding to the concerns, the Chief Minister announced several key projects, including the sanction of ₹13.35 crore for the construction of the Jongksha–Thynroit Bridge to enhance regional connectivity, and the creation of an artificial turf field adjacent to the Indoor Stadium at Mawkynrew to promote youth engagement in sports.
Sangma also announced the establishment of 1,700 new Mini Anganwadi Centres across Meghalaya within the next two years to ensure universal early childhood coverage. In the interim, Mini Anganwadi Centres will operate from community spaces within three months. Additionally, ₹60 lakh has been sanctioned for the repair of 20 existing Anganwadi Centres under the state scheme.
On education, the Chief Minister said Meghalaya spends over ₹3,500 crore annually, with ₹2,000 crore dedicated to teachers’ salaries.
“To improve efficiency and ensure equity, the government will restructure grants for Adhoc and SSA schools and rationalise school categorisation to strengthen quality education delivery,” he said.

He also underlined the government’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) Mission, which adopts a holistic, life-cycle approach to address the health, nutrition, and learning needs of children and adolescents.
Addressing rural livelihood issues, Sangma directed officials to strengthen veterinary services and assured that the CM FARM+ and CM SEEDS schemes would be expanded to provide more seeds, farm equipment, and financial support for local farmers.
He also urged construction workers to register for labour cards to access welfare benefits under the Labour Cess Fund.
“Your valuable inputs and cooperation enable us to serve you better. Together, we will build stronger communities and ensure that every household benefits from our development efforts,” Sangma told the gathering.
