Meghalaya Govt pushes organic farming, fertilizer plant faces challenges

Must read

SHILLONG, FEB 19: Minister Timothy D Shira informed the Assembly on Thursday that Meghalaya has 4,36,270 hectares of arable land, with 56,709.50 hectares under organic farming interventions and 26,948.413 hectares certified organic.

UDP Mawphlang legislator Matthew B Kurbah questioned the functioning of the Kyiem fertilizer plant.

Shira said the plant has a 5 metric tons per day capacity but production depends on demand. “If there is no demand, there is no production,” he stated.

Kurbah expressed concerns over the plant’s inactivity, to which Shira replied, “Maybe there is no demand, that’s why it is not operating.”

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma supplemented that the plant is run by IVCS, producing 33,000 kgs (33 metric tons) of bio-fertilizers in 2023, with 9000 kgs in stock.

Sangma acknowledged productivity challenges but termed it a “positive step” and hoped for increased production.
