Shillong, Oct 29: Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla has stated that the government is exploring possibilities to address concerns surrounding the 108 emergency service, currently run by the National Health Mission (NHM).
Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, Shylla said the government is trying to find ways to accommodate the service, but faces challenges, including significant financial implications.
“We are meeting very soon. Government is trying to find ways and means to accommodate them. Last time we have called for a tender but nobody qualified. We are finding a way,” he said.
When asked about taking over the emergency services, Shylla said the government would like to, in principle, but notes that there are challenges, including financial implications.
“Government would really like to take but we also have to realize that there are some challenges. It is not easy as the financial implication is so much. That is why we are exploring possibilities,” he added.
Whether the government will again float tender for handing over the emergency services, Shylla said, “Right now I cannot give any comment on that because we are supposed to have a meeting. Very soon we will have a meeting and then only we will come up with a clear-cut decision on the matter.”
Shylla did not provide a clear timeline for a decision on the matter, stating that a meeting would be held soon to discuss the issue further.
He also did not comment on whether new fleets of ambulances would be sanctioned, saying that nothing has come to his notice on this matter.
Currently, NHM is running the emergency services smoothly, with no complaints received.
