Shillong, Oct 29: The All Jaintia Muster Roll Workers Union has given the Meghalaya government an ultimatum to clear pending arrears of muster roll workers, effective from October 2, 2023, to December 31, 2024, in accordance with the Minimum Wages Act 1948.
Addressing a news conference after a meeting with the commissioner & secretary in-charge finance Vijay Kumar on Tuesday, adviser of the union, Khro L Pariat, stated that the union had served an ultimatum to the government, seeking clarification on whether the government would pay the pending arrears or override the provisions of the Minimum Wages Act 1948.
The Commissioner Secretary has agreed to provide a resolution within one month, but the union has given a deadline of one week for the government to provide a written clarification.

Pariat said that the union does not want to resort to agitation or take any action against the government, but is willing to explore all options, including approaching the High Court of Meghalaya, to ensure that the workers’ rights are protected.
The union will convene a meeting of all muster roll workers on November 3 to decide on the next course of action, which may include starting an agitation, stopping work, or approaching the court. The union is also seeking revision of the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), which has not been revised despite high inflation.
“We invite and we appeal to all the muster roll workers to attendance meeting so that we will take a decision…if the government will not implement then will go to the court of law because the High Court of Meghalaya is the right platform to interpret the rules of the minimum wages act 1948 regarding floor rate,” Pariat stated.
The union’s adviser expressed disappointment that the government has not issued a notification revising the VDA, despite the passage of time, and is seeking a meeting with the government to resolve the issue.
