Shillong, May 15: The Meghalaya High Court on Thursday reviewed the status of work on the Jowai-Ratacherra section of NH-06 and directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the State to file fresh reports by June 8.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh was hearing PIL filed by Kynjaimon Amse, since deceased, against the NHAI and others.

Pursuant to the Court’s order dated April 17, 2026, counsel for NHAI tendered a fresh status report on the Jowai-Ratacherra section of NH-06 up to May 10, 2026. A copy was also served on the Amicus Curiae.

The order noted that the report “lists the steps taken by the NHAI with respect to the construction of work carried out on the Jowai-Ratacherra section of NH-06. It also lists the status of the three locations pointed out by the learned Amicus namely, Byndihati, Tonseng and Ratacherra.”

“It also appears that action has been taken against the contractors and penalty has been levied on them. It further appears that the slope stabilization work is awarded to a third contractor and the work is presently ongoing,” the Bench recorded.

Photographs annexed to the report showed the condition of the road as it existed on March 19, 2026, and the condition post that date “after laying concrete on the said section.”

Counsel for NHAI sought two weeks’ further time. The Amicus Curiae, S Panthi, also sought time to examine the status report and the contracts awarded to the contractors, copies of which were handed over to him.

The Amicus submitted that there were “certain other sections where the road condition is pathetic and there are huge potholes,” and informed the Court that the stretch was being maintained by the PWD.

Taking note, the Bench said, “Mr Khan, learned AAG to take instructions to ensure that the potholes, if any, to be filled before the next date.”

The matter has been posted to June 8, 2026, to enable the NHAI to submit a fresh status report and the learned AAG to also submit its report.
