Shillong, Feb 7: The Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday asked the State to take adequate measures to address traffic issues.
In its order, the Court said, “It is hoped that adequate measures are undertaken expeditiously to address the situation.”
The Court has also observed that when any construction is being carried out near public paths, roads or highways, construction materials are dumped on the roadside itself and activities are being carried out on the road itself, which poses a serious hazard to the flow of traffic and to the lives of pedestrians.
Similarly also is the case of workshops which are set-up alongside State roads and National Highways, where cars that come for repair are parked on the road itself.
“This should be immediately harnessed by the traffic authorities, so that the Right-of-way is not impeded in any manner, especially when there is high-speed traffic as in the Highways,” the Court said.
“Another issue which also needs to be addressed is the overnight parking of vehicles owners who do not have proper parking facilities, and who park their cars on the road haphazardly, which causes traffic congestion, apart from impeding the movement of public service vehicles, like fire trucks and ambulances,” it added.
Earlier, AAG ND Chullai had produced a set of instructions containing steps which are said to have been taken by the authorities with regard to containment of traffic offences, and for implementation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
