Shillong, Feb 27: The Government of Meghalaya has issued a public health advisory after suspected cases of meningococcal infection were reported in East Khasi Hills, prompting an active epidemiological investigation and enhanced surveillance measures.
According to the Public Health Advisory issued by the Health & Family Welfare Department on February 26, the State Surveillance Unit (SSU) has been notified of suspected cases, and the District Surveillance Unit (DSU), East Khasi Hills, in coordination with the SSU, has initiated case investigation, contact tracing, laboratory review and strengthened surveillance.
The department stated that the situation is being closely monitored and is “presently under control,” with no new suspected cases detected in other areas so far.
Health authorities have warned that meningococcal disease can worsen rapidly and that early symptoms are often mistaken for the flu or common cold.
As per the advisory and risk alert, residents are urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience:
Sudden high fever
Severe headache
Vomiting
Rapidly spreading purpuric rash.
Pale limbs in later stages
Circulatory collapse or shock in severe cases
The risk alert also notes that the disease spreads through saliva and close contact, and symptoms may take a few days to appear — a period during which infection can unknowingly spread.
Individuals at higher risk include infants, teenagers and young adults (16–23 years), the elderly, and those spending time in large groups such as hostels or parties.
Authorities said all necessary public health measures, including identification and monitoring of close contacts and implementation of preventive interventions, are being carried out as per standard outbreak response protocols.
The department has advised the public to:
Use masks in crowded areas, especially if feeling unwell.
Practice respiratory hygiene
Avoid crowded places where possible.
Maintain hand hygiene
Follow a balanced and nutritious diet.
Residents have also been asked to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. The advisory emphasises that rapid identification and preventive action are critical and that the 14410 call centre may be used to seek urgent medical assistance.
Health officials said further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
