Shillong, July 1: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) has expressed concern over the growing menace of drug abuse in the state, urging collective action to tackle the crisis.
MPMC President Joplyn Scott Shylla highlighted the devastating impact of drug addiction on the youth, citing increased reports of drug-related incidents, trafficking networks, and the loss of potential among young people.

The MPMC has identified several reasons contributing to the problem, including unemployment, peer pressure, easy availability of drugs, broken families, and mental health challenges.
To combat the issue, the MPMC has suggested measures such as: stronger law enforcement to crack down on trafficking networks, rehabilitation and counseling for addicts, awareness campaigns to educate students about the dangers of drugs, youth empowerment through skill development, sports, and entrepreneurship, community involvement and government accountability.

Shylla emphasized the need for collective action, stating, “Our youth are not just our future—they are our present, and we cannot afford to lose them to drugs.” She called for building a drug-free Meghalaya, where young people can dream, grow, and lead with pride.
