Williamnagar, Oct 22: In a significant crackdown against the militant groups the East Garo Hills police team recovered a huge cache of ammunition from Nengmandalgre jungles of East Garo Hills (EGH) today.

Acting on a tip from reliable sources, the EGH police team launched a search operation in the Nengmandalgre jungles and conducted an extensive search beyond the Simsang river and recovered 85 rounds of 7.71 mm ammunition of Sniper Rifle.

The EGH SP Bruno Marak has confirmed that the ammunitions has been taken to Williamnagar Police Station for verification. A case under the relevant sections of law is being registered and an investigation taken up by police.

The recovered arms and ammunition is suspected to have been buried by former Commander-in-Chief of Garo hills based militant group GNLA late Sohan D Shira who was slain in a police encounter in early 2018. The Meghalaya police have been recovering such arms and ammunition stored in the underground hideouts by conducting search operations in the area according to sources.
