Meghalaya set for historic women’s state league as 13 teams confirm participation

Must read

Shillong, June 8: The Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) has announced that 13 teams will compete in the inaugural Meghalaya Women’s State League (MWSL), set to kick off in August 2025. This statewide tournament marks a significant milestone for women’s football in Meghalaya.

Excitement is building for the first-ever league that will unite top teams from district associations affiliated with the MFA. Establishing a women’s league has long been a goal for the state body, and this dream will soon become a reality, thanks to crucial support from the Meghalaya government. The MWSL will also pave the way for Meghalaya clubs to finally participate in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) second division.

The MWSL’s structure is modelled after the highly successful Meghalaya State League for men’s clubs, which also benefits from state government backing. District associations that previously organized local women’s leagues were eligible to nominate their champions and runners-up for the MWSL.

Eight district associations held such leagues, leading to the confirmation of 13 teams for this pioneering all-Meghalaya event. A meeting held on Saturday in Shillong brought together club representatives and senior MFA members to finalize details for the MWSL.

While specific venues, the exact start date, and team groupings will be announced later by the MFA, players and teams across the state are already gearing up for this historic league, which will ultimately crown the Women’s Champions of Meghalaya.

The participating teams are:
Ri-Bhoi District Sports Association – Na Rympei Football Academy (Champions), Pahamsyiem SC (Runners-up)
Shillong Sports Association – Laitkor SC (Champions), Pay For Right Football Academy (Runners-up)
Mawkyrwat District Sports Association – Jakrem SC (Champions), Mawten SC (Runners-up)
Pyndengumiong District Sports Association – Young Sports Social and Cultural Club (Champions), Bright Future SSCC (Runners-up)
East Jaintia Hills District Football Association – Diengshynrum SC (Champions only)
Tyrsad Area Sports Association – Mawlum Tyrsad SC (Champions), Mawsawrit SC (Runners-up)
Riwar Mihngi Football Association – Lapalang SSCC (Runners-up only)
Laskein Block Sports Association – Chirupheiwei Nongkynrih FC (Champions only).
