Meghalaya tourist taxis to stay off Assam routes on July 9 in support of nationwide strike

Must read

Shillong, July 9: The All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) has announced that no tourist taxis from Meghalaya will operate towards Guwahati or any part of Assam on July 9, 2025, in support of the nationwide All India General Strike (Chakka Bandh) called by Central Trade Unions and National Federations.

The 24-hour strike, beginning at 5:00 AM on July 9, aims to highlight several key demands affecting transport workers across the country. These include:

1.Withdrawal of the Motor Vehicle Reforms Act 2019, which is viewed as unfavourable to drivers

  1. Removal of the “Hit and Run” clause under Article 106(2) of the Indian Civil Code (BNS)

3.Immediate halt to toll tax collection through satellite systems

  1. End to excessive and photo-based fines and simplification of rules related to pollution certificates and other documentation
  2. Provision of rest areas, clean drinking water, affordable canteens, and toilets every 60 km along national highways for commercial transport workers
  3. Ban on private vehicles carrying passengers in place of registered commercial vehicles
  4. Protection of motor vehicle workers’ rights and an end to legal harassment

The association stated that it had received formal communication from its counterparts in Assam regarding strict enforcement of the strike. In the interest of safety for both passengers and drivers, all affiliated taxi organisations in Meghalaya have agreed to suspend services to Assam for the day.

The association also issued a strong appeal to all taxi operators—both local and tourist—not to overcharge passengers, especially those in emergencies or needing short-distance travel to areas like Jorabat. Past strikes have seen instances of fare exploitation, and the association urged drivers to act responsibly and ethically.

“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused by this unavoidable disruption and request the public’s understanding and cooperation,” the statement read.

Normal taxi services are expected to resume on July 10, 2025.
