Meghalaya’s Chief Minister’s Solar Mission targets remote areas

Must read

Shillong, July 9: The Chief Minister’s Solar Mission, launched in August 2023, is steadily progressing, with groundwork underway to bring affordable and eco-friendly power solutions to every corner of Meghalaya, particularly remote and hard-to-reach areas.

Power Minister A.T. Mondal said the tendering process is ongoing, and some contracts have already been awarded. “The mission is well on track. Work is being initiated, and we are laying a strong foundation to ensure smooth and effective implementation,” he assured.

The flagship programme, spearheaded by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, is a major step towards promoting renewable energy and ensuring power equity across the state. “Our focus is on those living in areas where traditional grid connectivity is a challenge due to terrain and other limitations. This is aligned with our renewable energy goals,” Mondal explained.

To ensure transparency and effective execution, the government is forming district-level committees headed by Deputy Commissioners, supported by block-level monitoring teams. These bodies will closely supervise installations and ensure that quality and timelines are maintained.

In a move that also strengthens grassroots participation, implementation will be carried out through MGNREGA, allowing beneficiaries to be directly involved in building solar infrastructure in their communities.

2.Net Metering to allow consumers to contribute to the grid and lower their power bills.

  1. Affordable Solar Water Heaters to provide hot water without relying on electricity, promoting sustainable daily living.
