Shillong, Sept 5: Meghalaya has launched a first-of-its-kind training programme to prepare 100 rural youth from East Khasi Hills as professional Nature Guides, aiming to strengthen sustainable, community-led tourism in the state.

The programme, organised by North East Society for Agroecology Support (NESFAS) with support from LIC Housing Finance Ltd, was held in two phases at Ladmawphlang and Laitsohpliah between August 25–29 and September 1–5.

Over five days, participants received hands-on training in storytelling, tour planning, safety protocols, and crisis management. They were also introduced to digital marketing and business skills to help them explore tourism as a livelihood option. Sessions included field visits to biodiversity hotspots and lessons in Khasi and Jaintia traditions.

For many, the experience went beyond expectations. “We initially thought this training would focus only on guiding tourists and managing tourism, but we realised it was much more. It taught us about personal growth and how we can contribute positively in our everyday lives,” said Sephrin Nongrum of Umsawwar.

Others highlighted the confidence they gained. “I have learned important values such as communication, trust, courage, kindness, and respect, which have encouraged me to be brave and confident in pursuing this work,” said Ripynshai Diengdoh of Dewlieh.

NESFAS Executive Director Pius Ranee said the initiative was part of a larger effort to improve rural livelihoods through nature-based solutions. “To prepare them for immersive agri-tourism, young people must gain the exposure needed to provide quality service to guests,” he said.

Eco-tourism entrepreneur Gerald Samuel Duia called it a step forward in linking conservation with income generation. “This initiative not only conserves the environment but also transforms conservation into tourism livelihoods,” he said.

For participants like Queentymary Jalong of Liarsluid, the training opened up new possibilities. “It has given us many ideas on what we should do in this role. We have truly benefited a lot,” she said.
