Tura, Sep 5: Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang has raised alarm over the state’s growing drug menace, stressing that only a united effort involving government departments and society can effectively tackle the problem.
In an exclusive interview with Hub News in Tura, Nongrang said the situation has worsened in recent years. “In the last five years, we have seized drugs worth over ₹100 crore. But the supply is still strong. This means we need to rethink and do more,” she said.

Highlighting the government’s initiatives, the DGP informed that a special Anti-Narcotics Task Force has been set up to strengthen enforcement. She added that under the Dream Mission, the Social Welfare Department will provide six trained sniffer dogs to the police by November.
“This issue cannot be handled by one department alone. We are working closely with the social welfare, health, and education departments,” Nongrang said, while thanking the state government for its support.

Issuing a strong appeal to the public, she urged society to step in alongside authorities. “This is not just the government’s problem. I don’t want Meghalaya to suffer like other states badly affected by drugs,” she cautioned.
Concluding on a note of urgency, the DGP stressed that only a joint effort can safeguard the future of Meghalaya’s youth and society at large.
