Guwahati, Sep 5: While three universities from the Northeast featured in the top 100 of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, only one college from the region made it to the list—Pachhunga University College, Aizawl.
Ranked 49th this year, the college has consistently secured a place in the NIRF top 100 since 2022. It was ranked 45th in 2022, 34th in 2023, and 35th in 2024. Out of 220 colleges from the Northeast that participated, Pachhunga University College stood out among the 4,030 institutions evaluated nationwide.
Established in 1958 as Aijal College, it is the oldest and largest college in Mizoram by enrolment and campus size. Over the decades, it expanded from offering intermediate arts courses to bachelor’s and later master’s programs, becoming Mizoram’s first postgraduate college.
Named after Pachhunga, a businessman and politician who supported its early growth, the college has undergone multiple transitions—from Pachhunga Memorial Government College in 1965 to Pachhunga University College under Mizoram University in 2001.
One of the distinctive features of the college is its unique setting with a sprawling 760-acre campus. Its lush-green vegetation, the result of 60 years of nurturing the campus and wide-open space with luxuriant natural vegetation, provides an excellent atmosphere of learning. The college is well-equipped with an IT facility. All classrooms are provided with projectors, and all departments are linked to the internet.
More than 80 per cent of the buildings in the college have ramps, and more than 80 per cent of the buildings have specially designed toilets for handicapped students. The college motto, “Learning & Service”, is the guiding beacon of our endeavour in striving for academic excellence in higher education and humanitarian services. The college has a village adoption scheme too.
