Shillong, Jan 31: Meghalaya’s ambition to emerge as a technology-driven growth hub in the Northeast is steadily taking shape, with major gains in digital connectivity and the upcoming Tura IT Park poised to be a game-changer for jobs and innovation in the Garo Hills.
According to official data under the state’s Vision 2032 roadmap, mobile and broadband connectivity in Meghalaya has expanded to 94.91 per cent, reflecting a sharp rise in last-mile digital access across rural and semi-urban areas. The government has set a clear target to ensure mobile connectivity in all villages, complete last-mile projects, and achieve 100 per cent completion of the new State Data Centre by 2032.
The connectivity push is already yielding results. The number of villages with mobile connectivity has increased from 4,082 in FY18 to 6,938 by FY25. At the same time, employment in tech parks has also grown steadily, signalling the early impact of digital infrastructure on livelihoods.
At the heart of this transformation is the upcoming Tura IT Park, described by officials as a landmark project for western Meghalaya. Supported by the PM-DeVINE scheme, the project involves an investment of nearly ₹127 crore, spans around 100,000 square feet, and is expected to host over 1,000 professionals once operational.
More than just physical infrastructure, the Tura IT Park is being projected as a catalyst for local talent. By creating high-skill opportunities closer to home, the project aims to reduce distress migration and open new career pathways for youth in the Garo Hills in sectors such as IT services, startups, and digital innovation.
The Tura initiative builds on the momentum of the Shillong Tech Park, inaugurated in 2022, which has already generated about 1,500 direct and 5,000 indirect jobs, while attracting national and global companies. Encouraged by this response, the state is moving ahead with Shillong IT Park Phase II, alongside the Tura facility.
Together, the two projects are projected to generate around 14,000 jobs, strengthening Meghalaya’s position as a regional technology and services hub.
Officials underline that these tech parks are not merely real estate projects but ecosystems designed to support entrepreneurship, skilling, and knowledge-based services, aligned with the goals of Mission 10. By integrating connectivity, talent, and modern workspaces, Meghalaya is laying the groundwork for a diversified digital economy.
With improved internet access reaching villages and major IT hubs taking shape in both Khasi and Garo regions, the state’s hills are quietly transforming into centres of opportunity. As Vision 2032 unfolds, Meghalaya’s digital story is increasingly about inclusion—connecting remote communities to the wider economy and ensuring the Northeast plays a central role in India’s technology-driven future. ” The hills are becoming hubs of innovation, ensuring the Northeast claims its place in India’s digital transformation”.
