Aizawl, June 30: Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma has called for a compassionate, community-centric strategy to tackle Mizoram’s growing drug crisis.
He today joined members of the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) in a Drug Disposal Programme that saw the destruction of narcotics worth over ₹4.29 crore.
Organised by the CYMA’s Central Anti-Drugs Squad (CADS) at the Central YMA Hall in Aizawl, the programme marked the disposal of drugs seized between March 15 and June 2025. The Chief Minister, serving as Chief Guest, personally took part in destroying a portion of the confiscated substances.
“We need proper rehabilitation homes equipped with skill training and livelihood opportunities. Only then can we ensure that those who overcome addiction are meaningfully reintegrated into society,” he said.
He further revealed that the state government is in talks with several church organisations to establish quality rehabilitation centres, signalling a shift towards more collaborative, faith-based recovery initiatives.
The Chief Minister also lauded the YMA’s unwavering commitment to social welfare.
“Institutions like the YMA are the backbone of our society. Their courage and dedication to drug eradication must be supported by all,” he added.
The event was chaired by CYMA President Pu Lalhmachhuana, who clarified that the destroyed drugs were seized directly by CADS and had not been handed over to the police or excise departments.
Between March 15 and June-end, CADS apprehended 809 individuals in drug-related cases. Of these, 440 received counselling, 37 were admitted to rehabilitation centres, 48 were handed over to the Excise Department, and four to the Police.
Due to the hazardous nature and volume of the seized substances, CADS members will continue the destruction process in a controlled manner over the next few days.
