Politics must be guided by mutual respect: Mizoram CM

Must read

Aizawl, June 30: Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma has called for cooperative federalism and respectful political discourse.

Addressing a large gathering at the state-level Remna Ni (Mizoram Peace Accord Day) celebration held at Aizawl’s Lammual, Lalduhoma said people of the state must maintain a good working relationship with the Centre, regardless of which party is in power. “Politics must be guided by mutual respect”, he remarked.

Organised by the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) General Headquarters, the ceremony marked the signing of the historic 1986 Mizoram Peace Accord that ended two decades of insurgency and laid the foundation for lasting peace in the state. The Chief Minister, accompanied by First Lady Pi Liansailovi, was the Chief Guest at the event.

Referring to recent remarks by the Union Home Minister that nearly half of Mizoram’s crimes were attributed to refugees, the Chief Minister appealed for calm and balance.

“The misdeeds of a few should not define the many. I appeal to all refugee friends to respect the laws of our land,” he said, urging citizens to uphold the state’s legacy of peace.

Following the hoisting of the Remna Ni Flag and a rendition of “Ro Min Reksak Ang Che” by the 1st Battalion MAP Brass Band, Lalduhoma addressed Zo people around the world, urging unity and harmony amid diversity.

“Peace is the foundation of all progress. My government shall leave no stone unturned to preserve and promote peace in Mizoram,” he asserted.

The Chief Minister announced that Mizoram is on the cusp of major infrastructure expansion, especially in road connectivity between the state’s north and south.

“As we open ourselves to greater connectivity, we must also prepare for deeper harmony among people of diverse communities and faiths,” he said.

He urged Mizos to embrace a form of nationalism rooted not in hostility but in mutual upliftment and unity. “True nationalism uplifts others and builds togetherness,” he declared.

MZP President Pu H. Lalthianghlima, in his address, said Remna Ni is a people’s celebration meant to transcend political divides and honour the unsung heroes of peace. “This day is not for glorifying the past, but for appreciating the hard-earned gift of peace,” he said.

The event was chaired by MZP Vice President Dr. C. Lalremruata, with opening prayers by Rev. Dr. Lalhmangaiha of the Council of Churches of Mizoram and a report presented by MZP General Secretary Pu Chinkhanmanga Thomte.

Notable dignitaries included Home Minister Pu K. Sapdanga, Ministers Pu B. Lalchhanzova and Pu F. Rodingliana, Deputy Speaker Pu Lalfamkima, Adviser to the Chief Minister Pu Lalmuanpuia Punte, and senior officials.

Since 2018, MZP has honoured individuals and organisations for contributions to peace. However, no peace honours were conferred this year.
