Dibrugarh, Sept 10: The Moran community in Tinsukia on Wednesday staged a massive protest, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam.
More than 20,000 people participated in the rally, pressing for long-pending tribal recognition (Janajatikaran) and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The protest, spearheaded by the Moran Students’ Union, turned into one of the largest movements in Upper Assam in recent years.
Accusing the BJP government of betrayal and deception, demonstrators raised strong slogans such as “BJP Go Back,” “Himanta is a liar,” “Narendra Modi Murdabad,” and “Amit Shah Murdabad.” Community leaders warned that if their demands were ignored, they would escalate the agitation into an indefinite economic blockade.
“This is not just a political slogan—it is about our identity, our rights, and our future,” said a leader of the Moran Students’ Union, adding that the movement will continue in phases until the government delivers on its promises.
The demand for ST status dates back to the BJP’s 2014 election campaign, when Narendra Modi pledged to extend the designation to six communities of Assam—Morans, Tai Ahoms, Mottocks, Koch Rajbongshis, Sooteas, and Tea Tribes. A decade later, these groups, still listed as Other Backward Classes (OBCs), remain excluded from the ST list.
