Guwahati, Aug 24: In a major boost to Assam’s development journey, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) has allotted four bighas of land in Colaba, Mumbai, to the Government of Assam on a 60-year lease.
The land, located in one of Mumbai’s prime areas, will enable Assam to develop essential public infrastructure projects in healthcare, education, social welfare, and entrepreneurship support.
Sonowal said, “This is a people-first initiative. The project will serve generations to come, providing access to critical facilities for patients, students, and entrepreneurs from Assam in Mumbai.”
Sarbananda Sonowal underlined the vision guiding this initiative, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has always emphasised that the Northeast must become a powerhouse of growth, driven by empowerment of its people. Today’s decision is another step towards realising that vision of an inclusive and sustainable Atmanirbhar Northeast. Mumbai is a financial hub. With the development of this land parcel, we are confident that the entrepreneurs from the state can also have access to the opportunities from the maximum city.”
The announcement follows a request from the Assam Chief Secretary, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the move as a “vital milestone in Assam’s growth story.”
Officials indicated that plans are underway to build facilities of high public utility, including healthcare, education, and incubation centres for entrepreneurs. The 60-year lease ensures long-term planning and sustainable execution.
Sonowal added that the step aligns with PM Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Northeast, creating stronger national integration and access to opportunities in India’s financial hub.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on X- This is a really great news for Assam. This parcel of land will allow us to develop critical infrastructure in the heart of Mumbai which will aid a wide section of Assam’s people visiting the city.
