Guwahati, March 27: In an election season marked by high-stakes contests, the Guwahati Central constituency has emerged as one of the more closely watched political battlegrounds in Assam.
At the centre of attention is 26-year-old Kunki Choudhary, the youngest candidate in the fray, who is making her electoral debut as a nominee of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) in the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for April 9.
Choudhary completed her schooling in Guwahati before pursuing higher studies at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, and later in London, where she earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from University College London.
Her entry into the electoral fray reflects a broader trend of increasing youth participation in state politics. Contesting from Guwahati Central, she is up against seasoned Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bijay Kumar Gupta, setting up a contest that juxtaposes youthful ambition with political experience.
The Guwahati Central seat has traditionally been a significant urban constituency, often witnessing closely fought elections. This time, the contest has drawn attention for its contrast in profiles, as regional political aspirations challenge established party structures.
Speaking about her first campaign, Choudhary said she is navigating a steep learning curve while engaging with voters.

“It is a very new experience and I am learning a lot. I am happy to see the response and feedback from the people. My main challenge is to understand the problems of the people of this constituency and to be able to solve them and win their trust. That is the most important thing for me,” she said.
She added that youth development remains a key priority in her campaign.
“I am trying to establish a skill hub centre for the youth here, which is a big priority for skill development. If I win, I will work towards empowering young people with opportunities for entrepreneurship and employment. I am very hopeful, but ultimately it is up to the voters of Central Guwahati to decide on April 9,” she said.
As campaigning gathers pace, the Guwahati Central contest is expected to remain under close watch, particularly as young candidates like Choudhary seek to bring fresh perspectives into Assam’s political landscape.
