Jowai, May 30: Persistent heavy rainfall since Thursday night and throughout Friday has led to the significant swelling of the Myntdu River, as well as disrupted normal life throughout the Jaintia Hills as schools remained closed and people stayed off the road.
The heavy downpour has submerged few of the stalls at the picturesque Syntu Ksiar area.
Due to the relentless rain, all schools, colleges, and other educational institutions in the region remained closed on Friday, as authorities prioritized the safety of students and staff.

Commercial hubs in Jowai town presented an uncharacteristic sight, with most roadside stalls and shops empty and shuttered. The usually bustling and traffic-laden roads of Jowai were notably clear, as many residents opted to stay indoors amidst the inclement weather.
Interestingly, the swollen Myntdu River, despite the danger it poses, has drawn an unusual number of fishermen to its banks.
