Guwahati, Aug 13: On the occasion of World Elephant Day, two frontline elephant caregivers from Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh, were honoured with the prestigious Gaj Gaurav Award for their exceptional service in captive elephant welfare and management.

Kirti Vardhan Singh, Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, presented the award to Ganesh Tamang, an elephant mahout with over 26 years of experience, and Sumit Gogoi, an elephant attendant with five years of dedicated service.
Tamang, known for his expertise in ethical elephant care, has played a key role in shaping animal welfare protocols, improving management practices, and training staff. Gogoi has been lauded for his commitment to enhancing both elephant welfare and staff well-being.

They were among seven awardees from across the country, making it a proud achievement for Arunachal Pradesh. They were the only one from Northeast to have got the recognition.
Congratulating the winners, N. Tam, PCCF (Wildlife & Biodiversity) and Chief Wildlife Warden of Arunachal Pradesh, praised their dedication to conservation. Namdapha National Park celebrated the recognition, calling it an inspiration for wildlife protection efforts.
