Tura, Aug 2: A new Self-Help Group (SHG) outlet under the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) was inaugurated on Friday in South West Garo Hills. Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak formally inaugurated the outlet in the presence of Betasing C&RD Block BDO, Crystal R. N. Sangma, along with key MSRLS officials including the District Functional Specialist, Block Project Manager, and Cluster Coordinator.

The outlet has been established with the support of MSRLS through the Sulguri Maa Santoshi SHG under Betasing Block. The group received a seed capital of ₹4 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme. This financial assistance has enabled the SHG to expand its food processing activities and improve production quality, packaging, marketing, and overall visibility through the new outlet.
The initiative is seen as a strong example of women’s economic empowerment through collective action and institutional backing. It provides a platform for rural women to access local markets, enhance their livelihoods, and move towards financial independence.
Officials noted that the opening of the outlet is a milestone for community-led development and highlights the vital role SHGs are playing in driving sustainable economic growth in the region.
