Kohima, June 16: The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has signalled a possible escalation of its agitation over the delayed NH-29 Kohima–Jessami Road project after its 14-day ultimatum to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) expired on Tuesday without any reported response.
In a fresh directive issued from its headquarters in Phek, the CSU said all affiliated units and subordinate bodies have been placed on a “state of readiness” and asked to remain prepared for any democratic protest or lawful agitation that may be announced in the coming days.
The union said its June 2 ultimatum seeking cancellation of the extension granted to EPC contractor M/s Ratna Infra Project Pvt Ltd and immediate restoration of the Chakhaba–Kikruma stretch had received no positive response from NHIDCL.
Describing the silence as a matter of serious concern, the CSU alleged that the continued delay reflects disregard for the hardships faced by commuters who depend on the highway, a key link connecting Phek, Meluri and parts of eastern Nagaland.
The latest development comes amid growing support for the agitation from several organisations, including the United Sangtam Students’ Conference, Pochury Students’ Union, contractors’ bodies, traders’ associations and local residents.
Reiterating its stand, the CSU said it would continue to pursue accountability and completion of the long-delayed project, declaring that it would “not relent, retreat or compromise” on issues affecting public welfare.
With the ultimatum now over and pressure mounting from multiple districts and student organisations, attention is turning to the union’s next move and whether the agitation will enter a more intensive phase in the days ahead.
