NHPC to set up Northeast’s first 800 MW pumped storage project in Tripura

Must read

Agartala, July 19: Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath has announced that a Pumped Storage Project (PSP) with a generation capacity of 800 MW will be established in the state.

The project will be developed by the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC), following the 900 MW Bagmundi PSP in Purulia, West Bengal.

The announcement was made during the 29th North Eastern Region Power Committee (NERPC) meeting in Guwahati.

The Power Minister also played a key role in blocking a proposed hike in gas prices for the OTPC Palatana power project—a move that would have increased the financial burden on all Northeastern states.

Highlighting Tripura’s commitment to clean energy, Nath cited the installation of 45,000 solar street lights, 4,900 solar pumps, 215 micro-grids, and rooftop/off-grid solar projects with a combined generation capacity of 26 MW.

Under a ₹2,275 crore Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the state will also renovate the Rokhia and Doombur power projects, aiming to double their capacity and enhance operational efficiency.

In addition, Tripura is planning to introduce battery energy storage systems to optimize solar power usage during peak hours.
