Guwahati, Dec 31:A Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Guwahati has convicted and sentenced a key accused in a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) terror conspiracy case linked to Assam, delivering a significant blow to efforts aimed at reviving extremist networks in the state.
The accused, Md Kamruj Zaman alias Dr Hurairah alias Kamaruddin, was awarded three separate sentences, including life imprisonment, for his role in conspiring to raise a module of the banned Hizb-ul-Mujahideen terror organisation in Assam during 2017–18.
According to the NIA, the court awarded life imprisonment under Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P) Act), 1967, along with five years’ simple imprisonment each under Section 18B of the UA(P) Act read with Section 120B of the IPC, and Section 38 of the UA(P) Act. All sentences will run concurrently. The court also imposed a fine of ₹5,000 in each case, with an additional three months’ imprisonment in default of payment.
The case (RC-08/2018/NIA-GUW) pertains to Jamunamukh in Hojai district of Assam, where Kamruj Zaman allegedly conspired to recruit and radicalise individuals to carry out terror activities with the aim of spreading fear among the public. NIA investigations revealed that he had recruited Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam, and Omar Faruk, among others, as part of the module.
The anti-terror agency had chargesheeted five accused in March 2019. While Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam, and Omar Faruk were convicted earlier after pleading guilty, the fifth accused, Jaynal Uddin, died due to illness during the course of the trial.
