Tura, July 25: Amid ongoing eviction drives in parts of Assam, the administration of South West Garo Hills has confirmed that there is no influx or unrest along its border with the neighbouring state.

Deputy Commissioner, Hema Nayak has assured that the district remains unaffected as the evictions are not taking place in the adjacent South Salmara–Mankachar region, which borders Meghalaya.

“We share only a short 10-kilometre boundary with Assam, but we are staying vigilant and prepared to respond to any situation,” DC Nayak said.

The administration is maintaining close coordination with local village headmen, police, and other security agencies to monitor developments and ensure swift response if required.

South West Garo Hills also shares a 50-kilometre-long international boundary with Bangladesh, which is under constant surveillance. Officials have held meetings with border departments, local authorities, and law enforcement to reinforce readiness along both borders.

Efforts are also underway to revive village-level peace committees along the Assam-Meghalaya border, following the model of those previously established along the international border. These grassroots committees are expected to play a crucial role in maintaining peace and relaying timely updates from the ground.

The Deputy Commissioner also said that as of now, the situation remains peaceful, with the district administration assuring that it is fully equipped to handle any emerging challenges.
