Meghalaya CM alerts all districts near border amid Assam evictions, orders vigil against infiltration

Shillong, July 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting and directed district administrations and police to be on high alert, particularly in border areas adjacent to Assam, where eviction drives against illegal immigrants are underway, to prevent potential spillover into the state of Meghalaya.

“A review has taken place at my level to discuss the overall effect of the recent eviction drives that has taken place in the state of Assam and we have given necessary instructions to be on alert especially in the border area specially the ones that are bordering with Assam and specially the ones that are bordering the areas where the eviction drive is taking place,” Sangma said after the meeting.

He said that deputy commissioners have been instructed to maintain close surveillance in border areas, especially those adjacent to Assam, to prevent potential infiltration.

District administrations, police, Village Defence Parties (VDPs), and traditional heads are being coordinated with to ensure timely information sharing and action.

“The government has been continuously engaging with the deputy commissioners to ensure that the deputy commissioners further engage with the block level, BDOs as well as the thanas, the police personnel, the VDPs in different villages, the different NGOs and different traditional heads and all these communication and overall interaction is being done to ensure that there is no infiltration or movement that takes place because of the eviction that is taking place in Assam into our state of Meghalaya,” Sangma said.

The chief minister also confirmed that no incidents of infiltration have taken place in any district so far, and all stakeholders are working together to prevent any potential issues.

“There are certain vulnerable districts especially bordering Assam and closer to the areas where the eviction drives in Assam is going on hence special attention is being given in those districts. In the review meeting today where all the officials involved were present. They have reported and informed that no incidents had taken place in any of the district and that all the district administrations, the police, the VDPs, the different village level committees, the different traditional heads, the different NGOs – all are being coordinated with to ensure that any information that we received on any movement or any individual coming in will be informed immediately to us and appropriate action will be taken,” he stated.
