Northeast braces for deluge: IMD issues heavy rainfall and flood alerts across region

Must read

Guwahati, June 2: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on June 2 has issued an orange alert for parts of Northeast India, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and potential flooding across several states over the next 48 hours.

The latest bulletin from IMD highlights that the Southwest Monsoon has made an aggressive advance, drenching large parts of the region with heavy downpours since June 1. The brunt of the weather is being felt in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland, where both urban and rural areas are now under threat of flash floods, landslides, and agricultural disruption.

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to continue over Northeastern states till next 2 days and decrease in intensity thereafter” the IMD bulletin says.

“Localized flooding, landslides, and waterlogging are likely in low-lying and hilly areas,” the advisory states, urging residents to remain indoors and avoid travel unless necessary.

Rainfall Records & Wind Alerts over the last 24 hours:

  • Nagaland’s Zunheboto recorded 12 cm of rain.
  • Assam’s Panbari (Chirang) received 8 cm.
  • Meghalaya’s Williamnagar and Tripura’s Sabroom both saw rainfall between 7–8 cm.
  • Margherita in Assam was hit with winds reaching 72 kmph, prompting fears of damage to infrastructure and plantations.

Winds are expected to remain strong across the region, with IMD warning of speeds up to 70 kmph in parts of Assam and Meghalaya, enough to uproot trees and damage standing crops.

Agromet Advisories

  • Delay transplanting of rice in Arunachal Pradesh and sowing in Assam and Manipur
  • Drain out excess water and ensure proper drainage in the rice nursery beds, fields of soybean, chilli, okra and other vegetables and in Arunachal Pradesh; rice, sesame, maize, sugarcane, ginger and turmeric in Assam; bottle gourd and French bean in Meghalaya;
  • Secure and cover harvested produce with tarpaulins
  • Stake or support vegetable and fruit crops to prevent damage from wind

Livestock / Poultry / Fishery

➢ Keep the animals inside the shed during heavy rainfall and provide them balanced feed.

➢ Store feed and fodder in a safe place to prevent spoilage.

➢ Construct an outlet with proper netting around the ponds to drain out excess water, thereby preventing fish from escaping in case of overflow.

These warnings come as a major setback for farmers who had just begun pre-kharif operations, potentially affecting seasonal incomes and food security in rain-fed areas.
