Northeast can be India’s gateway to Southeast Asia: Jitendra Singh

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 26: Pitching the Northeast as India’s next gateway to Southeast Asia, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on Thursday said enhanced cross-border rail connectivity and structured bamboo-based industrial expansion could transform Tripura into a major trade hub.

Chairing a district-level review meeting in Sepahijala district of Tripura, the Minister asserted that the Northeast “holds immense potential to develop as a Southeast Asia trade corridor,” particularly with the upcoming rail connectivity to Bangladesh expected to reduce transport costs and improve market access.

Calling bamboo an “under-utilised strategic resource,” Singh urged the district administration to scale up bamboo utilisation in a commercially viable and value-added manner. Tripura, he noted, has rich bamboo reserves but limited industrial conversion and branding.

“Bamboo can be a game-changer for Tripura’s trade capacity,” he said, pointing to its applications in construction, interior design, furniture, handicrafts, jewellery and eco-friendly building materials. He stressed that better value chains, processing units and export linkages could generate sustainable livelihoods while strengthening the state’s trade footprint.

Referring to the rail link connecting Tripura to Bangladesh, the Minister recalled that the project was initiated during his tenure as Governor and has already received approval. While progress has slowed due to the prevailing situation in Bangladesh, he expressed confidence that once direct train services commence, Tripura — and by extension the entire Northeast — will emerge as a vital South Asian trade corridor.

Beyond connectivity and trade, the review meeting also assessed governance and development indicators in Sepahijala district. Officials presented updates on rural infrastructure, Jal Jeevan Mission implementation, PMAY-G performance, healthcare indicators, including institutional deliveries and immunisation coverage, as well as progress in agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and self-help group financing.

Innovative governance initiatives were also highlighted, including Mission Sankalp to eliminate child marriage and teenage pregnancy, rollout of e-Office for paperless administration, QR-based citizen feedback systems, Jan Sunwai grievance redressal mechanisms, rooftop solarisation drives and rainwater conservation measures.

The Minister emphasised that economic growth, social reform and connectivity must move in tandem to position the Northeast as a competitive trade and development frontier in the coming decade.
