Shillong, May 21: The National People’s Party on Thursday said it was confident of securing a “good majority” for its Lok Sabha by-election candidate Dr DRL Nonglait, with senior leader Sniawbhalang Dhar asserting that a “fresh” face would help the party overcome any anti-incumbency.
“The campaign for the Lok Sabha by-election is in full swing. Along with the candidate and party workers across all 36 constituencies, we are working very hard to ensure Dr DRL Nonglait wins with a good majority,” NPP national vice president and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar told reporters.
He said the party has mobilized its cadre across the state.
“As of now, we have teams in all 36 constituencies. Our party workers are on the ground and working very hard to win the by-election,” he said.
While conceding that governments typically face anti-incumbency, Dhar argued Nonglait’s candidacy was an advantage.
“Anti-incumbency is always a factor for any government. But our candidate is fresh, so there is no anti-incumbency against him,” he said.
Dhar said the NPP was drawing strength from leaders of other parties joining its ranks.
“As things stand, in almost all 36 constituencies, several people from different parties have joined us. This is a good sign that our candidate will secure a decisive victory in the upcoming election,” he said.
“In Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi and Khasi Hills, people have joined the party and we welcome them wholeheartedly,” he added.
On whether the ruling alliance would field a common candidate, Dhar said the NPP would keep its options open.
“We will leave it to them. If the BJP decides to field its own candidate, or the UDP, or others — they have done so. But if they don’t, we will see and discuss how to go ahead,” he said.
